What are fossils? Already before the birth of Christ the Greeks knew about the origin of fossils .It is only in the year 1600 that the Danish scientist , Nicolaus Steno declared that fossils are the remains of creatures that lived ages ago that have been preserved in age old rock formations . Modern scientist are slowly putting the puzzle together of life during this early geological history of planet earth.
Let us take you on a trip back through the ages and see the fossils of the animals and plants that existed then .Some of these have been reconstructed and can be seen in various museums .South Africa is world renowned for its rich deposits of fossils.

West Coast Fossil Park-Langebaanweg.
We travel 5 million years back into the history of the West Coast .We visit a site where thousands of fossils have been found of animals that existed during that period .It has been established that this is one of the richest 5 million year old fossil sites in the world.
The site at Langebaanweg is of national and global importance .It records an age immediately before the advent of tool-making people .The knowledge gained from this site provides dates from which to work out why and how life changed on earth.
The fascinating range of extinct animals from this site includes a bear ,Agriothenium africanum ,the first bear ever discovered south of the Sahara .Among the many other mammals represented are lion-sized sabre-tooth cats .long-horned ,short-necked giraffes ,three-toed horses and two species of extinct elephant .There are also a mega-tooth shark and a huge ostrich.

We visit the wonderful West Coast-Langebaanweg Fossil Park to view the fossils of animals that lived in this region 5 million years ago .Thereafter we call on the Hopefield museum and view Saldanha Bay from the top of a mountain .If time allows we will also take a boat trip to the bird islands or the West Coast National Park.

We start off with the one day tour but after the visit to the West Coast Langebaanweg Fossil Park we proceed to the Karoo National Park .There we will view fossils from the Dinosaur age-250 million years ago .Luxury accommodation is available and game viewing can also be arranged.

Day 1; We visit the S .A .Museum in Cape Town to view some fossils and reconstructed animals of the Dinosaur era.
We then proceed to the West Coast Langebaanweg Fossil Park and visit the Hopefield museum.
Day2; We travel to Beaufort West and visit the Karoo National Park to view The fossil sites and the area we saw the reconstruction of at the S .A . Museum.
Day 3; We now call on the small Karoo town of Frazerburg to see various Fossil sites and the Frazerburg museum and the Paleo-surface at Gansfontein nearby and if time allows some glazier prints.
We return via the magnificent Hex River Valley and Du Toits Kloof Pass to Cape Town.

Day 1; We firstly visit the S .A .Museum in Cape Town to view some fossils and reconstructed animals of the Dinosaur era .We will also get a good idea of what the plant life looked like in the Karoo during that period .We then proceed to the West Coast Langebaanweg Fossil Park.
Day 2; We travel to Sutherland where the world renowned astronomical Observatory is situated .We will view a burnt out volcano at Salpeterkop some fossils on the way to Frazerburg.
Day 3; We visit a Paleo-surface at Gansfontein ,glazier prints and fossil sites and the museum at Frazerburg.
Day 4; We travel through the vastness of the Great Karoo to Murraysburg to fossil sites on the farm Groot Driefontein Holiday Farm and then to Graaf Reinette where we visit the museum on Rondfontein Guest Farm .We then proceed to Niea Bethesda to Welwood Farm with the largest private fossil collection in the world.
We travel back to Cape Town on the 5th.day.
