ALL DIAMONDS ARE CERTIFIED
Diamonds were formed by the huge pressures that exist at depths of between 60 and 120 kilometers beneath the earth’s surface.
About 60 million years ago, when much of the earth was characterized by a single land mass, called Gondwanaland, a series of volcanic convulsions thrust up quantities of molten lava which solified into a material called kimberlite.
The magma poured to the surface through fissures or ‘pipes’. Some of the kimberlite contained pressure-hardened carbon crystals that are prized so highly.
Each of the pipes was exposed to the elements and became weathered by wind and the torrential rains and floods of the ‘wet period’.
Thus much of southern Africa’s diamond-bearing surface kimberlite was washed toward the Atlantic Ocean by the westward-flowing river systems of which the largest is the Orange River.
Southern Africa is one of the world largest repositories of gem diamonds. The deposits are concentrated in the Orange-Vaal system and along the west coast.
Beneath the surface of South Africa’s beautiful landscape, and embedded in the depth of its rocks, is gemstones of immense beauty and value. Their lure is known throughout the world. Of all the gems none holds greater value than the diamonds of this wonderful country.
The diamond, a crystal formed from pure carbon that has been subjected to immense pressure, is the hardest of all natural substances found on earth. Brilliantly lustrous when polished, it has been sought after throughout man’s recorded history, to be fashioned by generations of craftsman into glittering necklaces, bracelets, rings, scepters and crowns.
The high-grade gem diamonds are valued for their beauty and rarity and serve as an investment as well as an exquisite form of adornment.
Diamonds differ enormously in their nature and quality, though all have one characteristic in common; hardness (they enjoy the maximum 10 on the Mols scale of hardness classification.
Most diamonds are transparent, translucent and colourless but have the subtlest of tints, as in the famed blue-whites. A minority have more discernible hues- yellow, green or amber
Diamonds also vary in the arrangement of their facets. Some have simple square or triangles; others are more complex, with six facets (cube), eight (the common octahedron) and occasionally twelve facets (the rare dodecahedron).
In the hands of an expert polisher, the faces can be turned to marvelous advantage.
Working with delicate, sophisticated tools and eye of a master, he will transform an ordinary lump of crystal into one or several lovely
stones, each with as many as 154 plane facets.
Quality diamonds have stood the test of time as far as investment are concerned. A stone is dateless and will remain desirable to future generations. It can be passed on to future generations and embodies the love, the personality and memories of the person that owned them, when set in the correct jewellery.
Apart from the emotional value, it is also good value for money, when considering that the average price per carat was R9.13 (US$ 1.36) in 1962 and is now R26000(US$ 4000), surely a good return on an investment
