The Richtersveld-Quoted from Namaqualand Tourism Bureau brochure.
Twisted and faulted ,seared by a blistering sun ,the crenellated lava mountains and sandy plains of the north-western crook of the Orange River form South Africas largest mountain desert park.
Though surrealistically harsh the rugged Richtersveld nurtures some 30% of all South Africas succulent plant species. With less than 50 mm of rain each year ,it is home to leopards ,lizards, baboons and adventure .Paradoxically beautiful, it is a land for those keen to rough it .You can explore it from the comfort your 4x4 or paddle along stretches of the river taking in the awe-inspiring ,seldom-seen purity of an unspoilt wilderness. Along the journey you will encounter magnificent geological formations and changes .You will cross from a summer rainfall region and will cross Namaqualand brokenveld, false succulent Karoo, arid Karoo, western mountain Karoo, succulent Karoo and Sandveld.
You will come across goatherds and their owners living in reed huts, following the lifestyles of their forbears.
Fly out to Upington and start with a visit to the magnificent Augrabies National Park.
Then do a five day camel back adventure or a canoe adventure or a combination of these .Proceed to a 4x4 Richtersveld adventure .This is through some of the most rugged country in Southern Africa.
Or combine it with white river rafting.
Then travel down to Alexander Bay at the mouth of the Orange River. The Orange River Estuary is a Ramsar site renowned for its prolific bird life.
Here at Alexander Bay ,anglers can strike it rich.
A tour of the alluvial diamond mine and museum can also be arranged.
Travel to Springbok via Port Nolloth and fly back to Cape Town.
